Sci-Fi Fungus?

Every spring a few of our trees get a fungus like this one.  I find the fungus very interesting.  I think the color is so different than the surrounding colors and the texture makes it look like something right-out of a science fiction movie.

I wanted this photo to be about contrast—the contrast of the colors of the fungus and the background, the contrast in the exposure of the fungus and tree bark versus the background and the contrast of the in-focus versus the out-of-focus. I tried different crops but then settled on one that showed a lot of the trees in the background.  For some reason, that crop seemed right to me.

Enjoy.

Camera settings:  Nikon D3, 300 mm f/4, shot at ISO 200, f/5.6 and 1/250th of a second on a tripod.

Post Processing: Lightroom—Set white and black points, added mid-tone contrast, clarity and vibrance.

  1. I like the crop also because it helps place this wierd feature in a normal setting. Nice use of colors and textures as well.

  2. It's a pod! Once it's fully mature a person pops out! :-)

    Interesting photo!

    Cheers!

  3. I do believe that a more interesting photo would be one when the mature person pops out. Next time I drive by your place, I expect seeing a tent where you are camping out waiting for the big event.
Nice shot. Again, I think I would look at this and think 'interesting' but then not make a photo to share with others. Good going.

  4. It looks like a Tribble to me! I hope you don't look out back one day and see thousands of them...but that WOULD be a great photo op. I like the trees out of focus in the distance, it gives you a sense of the rest of the environment, but I am still not sure how big the fungus actually is. The light on it is very nice. Come to think of it, that thing is vaguely rat-like too.
