Posted Picture Revisited—Taking Your Comments to Heart

A few weeks ago, I posted this photo taken in the Badlands National Park.

I got no posted negative comments about it, however, one of my friends sent me this: “the lightly colored rock in the bottom left seems to be completely out of place with the rest of the scene.” I immediately agreed with this comment and as a result, I made the following changes.

I think the above photo is an improvement, but, the more I looked at it the more I decided that the overall composition would be improved by extending the green area within the photo. Although the above correction took me all of about ten seconds, this adjustment (even though not done to my standards for printing) took me about 15 minutes to do and a lot more pain. While I was making the changes with the green valley, I also changed the overall tint of the sky to better match with the hills. Was this change worth the additional time and pain?

Enjoy.

  1. I like your changes. They seem subtle but both the more colorful sky and removing the foreground rock have enhanced this image for me. But you lost some of the sharpness in the mountains in the distance, was that deliberate?

  2. The changes improves the photo. I like the way that the green brings you more into the photo. It is a great leading line.

  3. I like the richer colors too and the work on the foregrond. I didn't notice the loss of sharpness in the distance though.

  5. I like the addition of bringing the green into the foreground of the photo. It leads your eye more easily through the photo.

You definitely lost detail in the top of the mountains in the 3rd shot. The detail is in the original and second shots, going left to right across the top where they meet the sky. It looks like you moved your black point out to the left some or used the fill light slider in LR2. That last shot lost some black across the whole image.

I like the darker original shot with the added green in the foreground and the lighter rock removed.

  6. It seems that Cindi and DHaass always get hung up on the smallest things. I do not know whether you lightened or darkened the mountains in the back or not. I do think that the lighter color of the mountains makes them blend better than the darker ones thus drawing your attention to the sky. To me the photo has three elements, the green valley leading you to the middle mountains that are set off against the sky.

  7. I like the changes. I guess I do not have the concerning eye that DHaass and Cindi has.
