I first noticed this lady before we entered the park. The thing that I first noticed about her was how gracefully she seemed to carry herself. She looked like a ballerina—she moved with very little effort and with such grace.
When I saw her setting on this bench, I thought that she would make a really nice portrait. I wanted this one to be very simple. I framed her so some of the bench formed a nice line and there was enough light and dark parts of the ground to form an interesting pattern.
Enjoy.
Camera settings: Nikon D3, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 at 120mm shot at ISO 200, f/6.7 and 1/90th of a second with a SB-800 flash in a softbox at camera right.
Post Processing:
Lightroom—Set white and black points, added mid-tone contrast, added clarity.
All the colors in this portrait go so well together. I agree the simple forms in the background make for added depth and interest.

She does seem very calm and graceful, something about her expression conveys that. All the muted tones help to give a peaceful feeling to this image too. This portrait makes me curious about her story, and from her clothing I would not necessarily think she was in costume at the RenFest, although it has a slight Bohemian feeling and could easily have been taken in another country.
ReplyDeleteI have to add to Cindi's comment about being calm. This woman appears to be very comfortable in her own skin. It conveys a very relaxed mood, not at all uneasy with being photographed. I have to believe that it's in no small part due to the photographer.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Agree. And agree. Debbie, Cindi and Doug all see the same things that I see in this portrait. The lighting is great. It gives her face a very three dimensional feel.Your selection of f6.7 gives enough sharpness to her face, especially her eyes, but blurs the background nicely. Good job.

My favorite of yours from this year. Really great subject - interesting, thoughtful, elegant. Your capture and postprocessing plays up all of these qualities. Super shot!
