Soft and Muted

JD had me doing a few things in “her” yard when I spotted this ginger plant.  I have tried many times to take a photo that I liked of ginger plants, but had never taken one that I really liked.
For this one, I tried a little different approach—high key with a soft focus look.
Enjoy.
Camera settings:  Nikon D3, Nikon 105mm f/2.8 at ISO 200, f/5.6 and 1/30th of a second on a tripod.
Post Processing:
Lightroom—adjusted hue and saturation of various colors and reduced some mid-tone contrast.

  1. Like your approach. It gives the ginger plant an abstract quality that makes it more interesting. Good color combination.

  2. Great colors but the composition seems to be off. Cannot put my finger on why it is off however it seems that way to me. You achieved your softness feel.

  4. I like this a lot. The only thing that bothers me a little is that dark green part to the left. What about patching some lighter green over that or lessening the green intensity on just that part? Great shot though. Really like the shallow depth of field.

  5. Steve is right. A little patch work will send this image to the next level.

  6. I do not like it. Seems too sissy.

  7. I agree with Steve S. assessment of the green area, but still love the shot. I like the minimal DOF and pastel colors.
